The very beginning moments of a beautiful sibling relationship unfold before the lens of Des Moines, Iowa photographer Anna Jones. One of the benefits of photographing a subject over and over is that you develop a rapport with them and they are generally more at ease in front of the camera. It’s obvious that this family and especially the new big sister comes to life for Anna and there is a comfortable, relaxed dynamic in the way they allow real life to play out as they are photographed. A hybrid film and digital photographer, Anna captured the wonder of the abrupt change that a newborn brings to a family. Suddenly the pace of life slows and schedules disappear. Saturdays could be Tuesdays and events are planned around feedings instead of particular hours of the day. Dinners are graciously accepted from friends with tired smiles of thanks and hot coffee is brewed and sipped in large quantities. New rhythms form and sleep becomes the sweetest of all indulgences.
While Anna has both a Hasselblad 500 and a Leica M6 film cameras, she tells us that her go to gear for family photography is her trusty Canon 5d and 35mm lens. A late July morning in the comfort of home sets the stage for this laid back session. Anna shares about her favorite moments to document while photographing a baby:
My favorite moments to capture during a newborn session are the ones that you actually experience day to day. Parents looking at their new baby so full of love, swaddling, changing, and just hanging at home. Siblings and pets in the mix of course always make for some more interesting compositions.
Anna’s words fully support her casual yet mindful way of approaching her image making. She loves the way images from a family session work together to tell a story and the way that some images in particular capture a truly beautiful moment, with hope that this translates to the viewer. Anna tells us that her favorite images from this session are the ones where dad is swaddling his new baby boy under the smiling watch of big sister. She clearly adores her brother and is having the best time getting to know him, and that shines through in these photographs.
For the curious, the adorable birth announcement featured in the first image was designed in collaboration with Alesha of Tandem Hart, and was inspired by the Royal Tenenbaums DVD cover.
