The sunlight filtering through the mountain trees as the day comes to a close. The crisp chill that sets in as daylight begins to fade. The sound of water trickling down the mountainside, at the beginning of a long journey that leads to the sea. A magical place where the clean air lifts your heart and lightens your burden. This is the storybook setting where this session by photographer Kandice Breinholt takes place in the mountains of Utah. It’s always a privilege when a fellow photographer seeks you out and chooses you to document their own story and family. It’s a compliment and an honor and perhaps a little nerve wracking. You cross your fingers and hope that everything will go off without a hitch.
But this life is imperfect and the weather doesn’t always cooperate with our well laid plans. Kandice shows us how she made the most of a windy, chilly day in the gorgeous mountains of Utah, and how along with her clients, she embraced the hand that was dealt and captured the wind whipping through the children’s hair and sweet family snuggles under a warm quilt. After all, hugs and cuddles lead to honest facial expressions and real moments, and everything about these images exudes warmth and love and you would never know it is anything but a warm and sunny day by looking at them.
Kandice gives us the scoop on her approach to family lifestyle sessions:
“You shoot the family, as they are, even if the situation isn’t ideal. You have the opportunity to showcase how they truly are around each other and more often than not, you can capture how they comfort one another (be it wiping away tears from little cheeks, how you interact when you try to make them laugh, or setting them on your lap so you can offer comfort and support). Those are the magical family moments that inspire my photography and I cannot capture them enough.”
Kandice tells us that her favorite images from the session are a toss up between the wide angle adventure shots that she completely adores, and the moments that the family spent huddled up together under a blanket to keep warm. One child was cold and wanted to be held for most of the shoot but you wouldn’t know it when you look at these images. Love shines brightly and we couldn’t be more captivated.
