Years ago our studio shot Marina and Craig on their wedding day!
Marina is from Japan and Craig from Australia, so getting married in Hawaii was the perfect meeting place for their two families to celebrate.
Fast forward 7 years and they now live in Japan with two adorable kids! Marina was on maternity leave (which is for a whole year in Japan!!) so they came back to Hawaii for a relaxing family vacation.
I love being able to watch our past couples grow their families and it was so fun to be able to capture them now as parents with two young children.
Being based in Honolulu, Hawaii, beach photos are something I often shoot. For this session I chose to shoot at Diamond Head Beach. Marina and Craig were staying in Waikiki and this beach is close to Waikiki but primarily a surfers beach, so it’s a lot less crowded.
I love taking couples and families here because the sunset light is always nice and the beach is pretty empty. There’s also variety in this location with a pretty garden/cliff area with palm trees and lookout points at the top, and then a path that leads down to the water.
For outfits, I suggested wearing greens and blues as it always looks soft and dreamy against an ocean and palm tree palette. Long dresses like Marina wore have great movement in the wind.
Shooting children is always a challenge because it all depends on their mood but I got so lucky with these two cuties! My favorite trick for kids at the beach is to let them play in the waves while I follow behind them.
I love the movement captured (especially on film) and their smiling happy faces as they run from the waves. They also often don’t even know they’re taking photos!
