Why do I love film?
Well technically I learned photography on digital.. so I’m not just stuck in old school ways.
It’s the look of the film.. I feel like there is more depth in my images.
It’s the way it handles light (of which I have a ton in Hawaii).
It’s the colors.
It’s the less time on the computer.
It’s the process of shooting film, slowing down, having a choice of different cameras, the variety of films.
and with that, here is my review of CJ Nicolai’s Fall in Love with Film Breakout session happening now on Clickin Moms.
First things first …. CJ Nicolai is a very talented black and white film photographer. Her images are inspiring to say the least.
This breakout session is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in learning how to shoot black and white film and especially if they are interested in learning how to develop the film at home. CJ has a ton of information in her pdf and step by step directions in her video on loading the film and developing the film.
CJ’s session is good for beginners or not so beginners. She starts off with the basics.. the difference between medium format or 35mm film, the camera choices and the different sorts of film, especially black and white films. I love that she includes toy cameras and goes through them as well. The format is easy to read and understand and illustrated with her amazing images in the different formats and films.
Her section on how to expose the film correctly is really thorough. I love how she explains the difference between exposing for digital and exposing for film. Again, her illustration of the different ways to expose with her lovely images is very effective.
And if you want to learn to develop film at home, this is the resource. Tons of information, laid out easily with accompanying video so you can make sure you are doing it right.
My favorite is her creativity section. She shows how your creativity can really help to create some outstanding images.. everything from pantyhose to vaseline.
All in all, this is an excellent resource at a very affordable price. Thats a big fat WIN.
