Wentzu Chang: DIY and budget conscious wedding tips

Nothing like changing jobs to realize the one you really want was there all the time!! Elizabeth + Michael evolved from co-workers, to friends, to confidants. It took them not being together everyday (Elizabeth moved on to a new job), to realize how much they wanted to be together everyday. Ah, love.

Photographer, Wentzu Chang, shared this super simple, DIY wedding and the bride shared some great DIY/Budget tips with our readers!

The couple chose historical Farnham Martin’s Park in Palos Verdes Estates, California for their big day. – For the other locals who don’t know what park that is, it’s Malaga Cove Library, I had to look it up!! – With an amazingly inexpensive fee and not a lot of fussiness allowed, per the city, it was a perfectly beautiful place for them to state their love for each other! Rather than having a theme they used bird imagery and references, from a bird silloutte on their invitations to birds mentioned in a ee cummings reading during the ceremony. Michael’s father wrote the ceremony with the couple and officiated the event — which made the ceremony so very personal, and the day so memorable. Also, important to the couple was involving Elizabeth’s son Leo (Michael’s new stepson)  in the ceremony, and introducing them as a new family!! Even though Elizabeth and Michael were apprehensive about being the center of attention for an entire day – being surrounded by their favorite people made the day fly by!!

Elizabeth shared with us her budget and DIY tips for throwing an unforgettable party without completely breaking the bank.

  • definitely book a restaurant rather than a hall, as they have all linens, flatware, etc
  • buy dress second-hand and alter to fit you perfectly — it’s great to have a dress with its own story
  • determine a few key elements important to you, and don’t skimp on those (for us the food, the flowers)
  • work with friends and referrals — but respect that they are artists and not volunteers
  • choose vendors with a style in mind, communicate your vision, and let them explore and demonstrate their artistry, rather than dictating all details
  • make your own decorations, invites, thank you’s

I also LOVE that they had a kids craft table to keep the little ones busy during the reception!!
