Newborn love abounds in Salt Lake City with Summer Murdock

The talented and lovely Summer Murdock of Salt Lake City, Utah, wife, mother of four gorgeous children, fan of popcorn, bike rides, the beach, string cheese, and oh did we mention, photographer extraordinaire, shares an exquisite newborn session with us today. Easy going and relaxed first time parents who just let her do her thing, and an amazingly alert baby girl combined to create images featuring genuine connections and the creativity and fabulous use of light that Summer is known for.

Mid morning on a bright, sunny day, Summer photographed this newly minted family of three, including the star of the show, their three week old newborn baby. The family makes their home in a beautifully restored treasure of a house that shines with the architectural details of days gone by. Big, dramatic windows, detailed woodwork, high ceilings and unique lines posed both creative challenges and opportunities for the photographer. Fortunately, Summer had a circular diffuser in her gear and was able to soften some of the hard morning light that poured into the home and made the lighting situation work in her favor, resulting in dramatic images with lighthearted pops of color.

Summer tells us that she likes to go with the flow at newborn sessions and allow the mood of the baby to dictate what comes next. She tries not to worry about the baby sleeping and seeks to capture life as it plays out in front of her. When asked to describe her approach to family photography, Summer shares this with us:

“My goal at every family session is to tell a story and to capture the family’s connection. I hope in 20 years when this family looks at these images, it will remind them of what it felt like to hold this new baby in their arms. I am not worried about perfection…just emotion and connection.”

Summer’s favorite gear for her lifestyle photography sessions include her Canon 5D Mark iii paired with her Canon 24-70 f2.8 ii, Canon 50mm f1.2, and Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 lenses. The wide angle lenses allow her to get up close and personal with her subjects while achieving the lovely environmental portraits that are often a part of her work. This dreamy newborn session is just a small peek at Summer’s work and we are always thrilled to share her photography with our readers.
