Ashley Smith of Taryn Reid Photography shows us that mistakes can be good. Her new series called Roll Stories shows us the full roll of film of a subject, mistakes and winners both. But viewed all at once, it gives an unique and fuller capture of the personalities of the subject (her son here) and the photographer herself. Sort of a candid view into her work. I love it and find it refreshing. I think this will be more likely to be treasured twenty years down the road than a highly stylized shoot with a say cheese expression on him. Here’s what Ashley has to say:
“This is my first roll of my new project called “Roll Stories”. I want to shoot a roll of film and show you everything. Mistakes and all. The first of my series is of my son Mason showing off his most favorite superhero cape that this Grammy Chiyo made for him and his dump truck. He’s 4 years old and I wanted to make sure I captured this moment in his life. It truly shows his personality at the moment. At times you can’t rip that cape away from him. Sometimes even when we go out his cape must go too. Glad he kicked off my project because just like that he’ll be attached to another thing and won’t even think twice about his cape. Then another story will be born.”
Technical:
Shot on a Bronica Sq-Ai w/ 80mm 2.8lens.
Kodak TMax 100
