Paula O’Hara sent in this wonderful family session.
“On family shoots I don’t have as much time for lens changing. On this session I used my 50mm and 35mm. I like to keep shoots and gear very simple. What really helped this session was catching the sun at the end of the day. Sunsets are like a ‘special occasion’ in Northern Ireland!
With families I prefer to just let them ‘be’ as much as possible. I want to capture how they interact naturally, without too much intervention or posing. I love the freedom in that, for them and for me as the photographer. As a mother myself, I’ve realised over the years that it’s our children’s ‘everyday’ selves that we want to remember.
Alot of my clients follow the work on the blog and know that’s the way it’s going to be shot. For me the blog is essential in attracting the right clients. This client was a photographer herself and also a close friend so I knew it was going to be a treat to document.
If I do need a really young child to look at the camera, singing songs or rhymes they like helps. Will (the youngest) here got a really bad rendition of Rihanna. It worked though! For older children it helps to get a heads up on what they are interested in to get their attention. This is how I ended up getting wrestled to the ground by Charlie in dinosaur mode:)”
