Let’s Go to Bed – Rebekah Westover –

Rebekah Westover does this so nicely.  We love black and white and we love babies!

“When I’ve photographed newborns in the past, I usually do them in a studio and pull out all sorts of fancy props.  The mom (in these specific photos I am submitting) is a good friend of mine.  I knew I wanted to start doing newborn photos in a more classic, and less trendy nature.  So I asked her if I could come into her home and photograph her family in a more casual environment. Since Megan is a friend and great returning client, I knew I would feel welcome and comfortable in her home.”

“Not only did she and her family welcome me into their home, they ALSO let me basically crawl into bed with them for the photoshoot!  After a lighting assessment of their home, I determined that the best location for the shoot would be in the master bedroom.  It had large windows and was simple and uncluttered which was PERFECT for photos.  Since we knew we’d be doing lifestyle photos, Megan dressed her family in comfortable and plain clothes.  It helps to bring the focus of the shoot onto them as a family.  The clothes and environment are not competing with the actual family in the photographs.

The majority of the photoshoot was done in the bedroom and against a plain wall in their bedroom.  I used a 50 mm lens, and a wide angle lens for the entire shoot. I processed them in a grainy b/w to emulate a film look.

I heart these photos so much!  I feel like they really capture the beauty of them as a family.  There is no focus on props, or putting the baby in weird or awkward positions which I think makes these photos timeless and classic!!”

Rebekah is located in Utah.

  4. Rebekah,

This is exactly where I have been wanting to go with my baby photography. Thank you for your example to inspire me. I just had a baby and thought I’d want to try all sorts of props with her in them since I finally had endless time with my own baby. When I got her in my arms, I realized that was the last thing I wanted to do! I felt almost anti-props with my sweet angel and newborn from heaven. All of a sudden I was a prop hater. Thank you for this! I wanted exactly what you’ve done!
