Lets Go Lifestyle with Annette Wilson

I really love the lifestyle sessions of families.  Where the photographer catches them in their element and shows the real truth of their lives together.  Annette Wilson did just that with this session sent in from Australia.
“Tasmania, the only state in Australia where you can say that you’re ‘going over seas’ when visiting. Because you are. Going over seas, that is. Over the Tasman Sea..For 5 days, I stayed withChelsea and her 4 crazy, crazy girls: Darby, Bethan, Hattie and Rowan (although she refuses to answer to anything other than Rosie).

The Parsons household- where pet food pieces are the currency, home made bread rolls in the shape of every farm animal imaginable are cooked regularly, fresh vegetables in every colour are chopped and consumed for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Regina Spektor, Florence Welch and Emiliana Torrini’s soaring voices hover in and out of every room and socks stuffed with fluffy insides are stitched into monkey toys.”
Only at the Parsons do you go to sleep listening to the Harry Potter books in audio form, and wake up to a labradoodle licking your face with a 3-year-old Rosie singing made-up tunes about nothing and softly strumming an out-of-tune guitar by your bedside.’

How long have you been shooting?
I have dragged a camera with me to everything, everywhere, for about 3 years. Professionally, 8 months.

About 8 months. Why do you shoot?  What drives you?  What inspires you?
I don’t know why I shoot, I never have known. I never planned to or aspired to be doing what I’m doing now, but maybe that’s its greatest appeal.
I am driven by the idea that what I’m doing isn’t stagnant and never will be. Every day I learn something different and new, the things I’m photographing couldn’t possibly repeat themselves and the people in my images will have inevitably grown, maybe just a tiny bit, but definitely grown, by the next time I see them. And that’s super cool to think about. I never wanted a job or to immerse myself in something that wasn’t inherently evolving. Always moving, growing, expanding, bettering. That’s the way I have always wanted my life to be.
I am inspired by sound and sight, and incredibly well-written pieces of nothingness, like the words of Brandon Boyd. Music fills my room and is always on my mind, sounds and their placement are really important to me and I can really say that I wouldn’t enjoy life half as much without it.

Any tips for shooting children?
They are as much your client as the parents. Treat accordingly.F
Favorite place to shoot and why?
My favourite shoots are the ones with friends, where we drive for a while into unknown territory near our homes. Australia is great because the landscape is so versatile- within an hour I can be at a beach, a valley, a cliff, an open field, a busy city, an empty warehouse. So the options are basically endless. Sometimes you just gotta go, without a plan, and see what you find.

What personal work do you shoot?  Any ongoing projects?

Ongoing project: Video portraits.

Best piece of advice you could give to a new photographer?
Shoot what you love and don’t let ANYONE tell you that it’s not cool. Because if you love it, it will always be cool.
