American Gothic, Portland Style – Posy Quarterman

I have to say, this session by Posy Quarterman made me a wee bit envious.  The story behind it (you can read it below), the moodiness of the black and whites, and oh, the painting(!) – is just so charming and rich and meaningful.  I love that this family had such a huge part in planning this lifestyle family session, and that Posy did such an incredible job of capturing it. It’s everything a lifestyle session should be. Love it!

Posy shot the whole session with a Nikon D700 and 35mm f2 then processed with VSCO in Lightroom.

From Posy:

Though I might normally suggest that you NOT let the dad’s dress themselves (ha!), and paint splattered work clothes are not what I would normally envision  for a family session, when Devon suggested it for her husband, Jess, who is a house painter by trade and “lives in his paint clothes,” well, what could I say? I’ll admit I was a tad skeptical, but in the end I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I want nothing more than for people to be themselves, and in that way, these guys really delivered. I knew I wanted to capture them in their tucked-away-in-the-woods above Portland home, but I also wanted to check out the children’s art studio Devon (and a business partner) had recently opened. So we made it a home AND work lifestyle session. And it rocked my world more than a little.

It was a photo session in which I fell head over feet IN LOVE with the entire family:  With the turntable  a-spinning  we danced around the living room, drank tea and read stories, then headed outside to their deck-bridge (a replica of our city’s beloved St Johns Bridge). We played with chickens, planted flower bulbs, climbed yarn-bombed trees, recreated the American Gothic scene, totally Portlandia style, and, oh yeah, there was also a hugging cat. We looked through a wedding album full of instant photos and handwritten notes, and then we hopped in our cars (theirs being a vintage Volvo station wagon, as well as a Subaru, of course) and headed to the Portland Children’s Art Studio where we splattered paint onto the walls, and ate snacks. As I was saying my goodbyes, sweet little Djuna looked at me with questioning big blue eyes and declared “but you didn’t even paint!” and at that moment I fell in love with her just a little bit more.
