I have been taking photographs for thirty years. My high school offered color photography in the dark rooms down in the science wing of the building. I could be found there any free period that I was allowed. Support was not in the arts within my family although I always felt that that was the direction I wanted to run. Although I majored in Art History and Comparative Religion, I continued to take photography courses during my college experiences because it was my true passion. I even built my darkroom in my grandmother’s basement.
With my History background, I became a teacher and have been teaching in the public schools for the past eleven years. When I had my second child, I went digital and professional. It was difficult to move out of the darkroom and to discover how to create images using the technology without losing the emotion that I connected with each and every image I processed. I have developed a very successful family/senior business and two years ago I partnered with a local artist and created an event photography company. I never thought I would say it but I LOVE shooting weddings!
I continue the need to shoot families. I am exhilarated and creatively fulfilled after each and every session. I have found that with my experience with all kinds of children that I am very comfortable about finding the true character of a family. A session with me is much like a play date and I am open to all types of adventures. My new passion has been families with children with special needs. It takes a patience that my years of teaching has engrained in my nature to sit and earn the trust of a non-verbal autistic child and get the image of him laughing with a sparkle in his eye. These are children that cannot be expected to sit, dressed up with the family and take a portrait. As a historian, I want to show people the way they truly are and to document the relationship and the feelings within the family dynamic.
