My newest photography crush is John Dolan. His work is real and honest and gorgeous all at once and I beg you to go look and see yourself. (Ill be showing his work on this blog as soon as I ask his permission).
His work shows the emotion of the people he captures. Its a real thing in his photographs.
And something I’m learning to show in mine. Its not the pose, or the aperture, or the lens or the film, or the clothes or the sky (although all those things matter), but in the end, its the emotion or feeling that makes the image. Doesn’t really matter if the horizon line is tilted or the focus is soft if you catch the glee of the child, or the love between a couple, or the laugh of the parents.
And the hardest part is doing this for clients. I’ve got tons of my kids laughing or crying or being themselves. But getting my clients to open up and letting me capture that emotion in one quick hour is harder for me. Here are some examples from recent client work:
What are your tricks to getting that emotion out in a family photography session? Share them pretty please.
Nothing better than some sweet little boys. They grow up oh too fast, but at the age of Jen Fox’s cute sons, they are still the sweetest things around. I love that this is just the end of a roll of film.
From Jenn:
“I’m submitting photos from a quick session i did with my boys. It was after attending FIND in december. I had borrowed a camera and had loaded a roll but needed to return the camera. It was not my intention to finish the roll but I was pushed to by a photo friend/camera owner. to say I’m thankful for that push is an understatement. I tossed them on the bed and let them roll around. my littlest was 8+ months here and getting to the stage where I can see my oldest start to see him as a playmate. to watch them become friends is pure joy. add all the white and creamy baby skin? these images are the definition of who i am as a photographer.”
And YES we chose a winner from our instagram contest for a LobLee bag!!! It was Amanda Mohinani! Congrats Amanda!
