First Time is the Charm — Anna Roberts – Third Avenue Photography

We received this little gem of a submission from Third Avenue Photography – Anna Roberts.

And here is her story:

“when my dad was a kid, his dad bought him his first camera. that little camera was a really big deal. my dad continued to pursue his love for photography and i remember him shooting several weddings and always being the guy everyone went to for pictures. it’s hard to find a picture with him in it because he was always behind the camera.

after my dad passed away in 2011, i came across some of his personal film work. i had never really seen it before and it is my absolute favorite of his. i will have to share some on here sometime. he was a graphic designer and used to have tons old cameras in his office. i have them all now and am working on trying them out. i chose to try out his old yashica first (you can see a picture of me using it on my facebook page). i believe my mom told me he shot some of his first weddings with it (wow, i can hardly imagine that!).

i purchased some black and white film (that was all they had) at a local camera store and finally got around to shooting some film. i was a little rushed, there was no light meter on the camera so i had to guess, and it had sat around so long i couldn’t even get all the dust off which made it hard to see to focus….buuuuuut i really like how they turned out!

i recently purchased some different film and am excited to try out some different film cameras!

like i said earlier, i was a bit rushed. the sun was going down fast and we also had somewhere to be. i wish i had had more time, but it is what it is and it worked out great. i was focused on trying to work the camera i had never used before that i gave no direction to the kids. i would look up and take a picture. it was so fun and i love each and every shot. the two littlest ones are mine and the two big ones are their cousins :)

so here they are, blurry images and all. no editing, perfect just the way they are.”

Happy Mother’s Day — Series of My Kid

For mother’s day, I gave myself a present. I went through all my old hard drives and albums. And I found my favorites of my children and put them all in my computer in one folder.

Whew.

Well actually it wasn’t that hard, because it turns out my favorites are only film shots and I didn’t start shooting film until my third child was born, so there were only a few from way back when I wanted to dig up.

But inspired by John Dolan‘s Olivia gallery and watching his daughter grow in photos, I can do the same for my kids.

This is for my son Nalu who is my oldest and is almost 17.

Its not fair… life never is, but his younger brother Noa (who just turned 5) will have the best portfolio of his growing up.

AND who won last week?  Well thanks for entering and its was Tim Massie who took away the prize.

Making Beautiful People Look Real and Real People Look Beautiful – John Dolan – New York Photographer

I see a whole lot of photography editing this blog.  I see amazing things and not so amazing things every single day.

And when  a friend of mine suggested I look at John Dolan’s site, I was prepared for more of the same.

But its not.

Its breathtaking and real. No tricks.

I can look at his site all day long.  Go and see… I dare you.

Tell me your favorite gallery of his in a comment below and you are in the running for a Richard Photo Lab coupon.

50% off for first time customers… 25% off if you are like me and have used them before.

I am giving 3 coupons away.

Me? I’m torn between the Olivia gallery and his family group shots.  But seriously, I love every image on there.

And John Dolan is teaching a class in August in N.Y.  One that I’m debating going to .. its a 10 hour plane ride for me.  But I think it’s worth it.

And from John:

“I use a variety of film cameras, 35mm& 2 1/4, mostly ones that don’t have batteries or meters. (Cameras that don’t work if your batteries die are not for me.) When people ask why I don’t switch to all digital I say “Why would I give up over 25 years of film knowledge?”

Digital makes everything look good, but takes more work to make it look great. I am much more efficient with film. My motto to myself is “With film, the reward is well worth all the risk.”

Though always remember,  It ain’t the wand, it’s the magician.”
