I LOVE when I find someone new. I mean someone new to ME. Which is pretty easy to do since I don’t spend my free time looking at other photographers’ work.
So when a friend in a facebook forum (where I do spend a bit of my free time) posted a link to Tyler Branch’s work, I was excited.
I love his take on family photography.
and how does he do it?
From Tyler:
“Digital.
I shoot with all Canon gear.
The lenses:
24mm 1.4
35mm 1.4
45mm 2.8 TS
50mm 1.2
85mm 1.2
135mm 2.0
The bodies:
5Dmk3
5Dmk2 (backup)
5D (backup to the backup)
When I’m shooting families I’ll tend to stick to the 35mm 1.4. It’s super versatile and really fits the way I see things.
Anything I approach with the camera is with the intention of coming away with a story. Since I normally shoot weddings, the format with families is a little different, but it’s something I really love. There’s a lot that goes on in the day to day of a family, especially a young one, that’s sometimes overlooked after months or years of it being there. It’s those things that I’m on the lookout for because in twenty years those things are gonna be just a memory.
I’ll normally spend around 2 hrs. Really whenever I feel I’ve got what I need.
I don’t know if there’s ever one way I do it. Every family is different and so it’s an adapting to who they are and how they relate to each other. I just try to find a balance between letting them be themselves and stepping in and helping.”
