Celebrating New Life on Summer Solstice | Carly Mitchell

There is nothing sweeter than a new baby, and it’s so fitting that this little one photographed by Carly Mitchell was born on summer solstice – a perfect celebration of new life.

From Carly:

My favorite unofficial holiday is the summer solstice. I like to spend as much time awake and living on the longest day of the year as possible. I’m not really sure when that became an unwritten rule for myself, but it’s there and i have been quietly disappointed in the past when i’ve unwittingly realized at 9 p.m. that the day is over and I wasted it. Last summer, however, not only was I awake with the sun for the solstice, I was up to help welcome new life into this crazy beautiful world of ours. My sister/best friend checked into the hospital very early that morning and baby Grey Mason, her 4th, was born a little more than 6 hours later. He was truly one of the cutest new babies I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the most amount of daylight of the year. To me, the most special part of the day was watching his two older sisters and older brother meet and immediately fall in love with him.
These photos are part of a year+ long project of documenting Grey, from finding out he’d be a boy to my sister’s last pregnancy to his birth and photos documenting his growth each month since.

The Other Side of the Camera – Breanna Schumacher

This submission from Breanna Schumacher was such a great reminder of how important it is to get in front of the camera from time to time.  I would love to have more images like these of me with my babies.

From Breanna:

The mother/daughter combo in the photos is actually me & my daughter. I have two wonderful kiddos & a loving husband, but I hardly ever get to be included in the photos, as I’m the one usually taking them (I’m not complaining, though, since that’s what I love to do!). I didn’t do self-portraits with our son when he was a baby, which was mostly due to my fear of feeling silly. I decided to not let that fear stand in my way this time. It began with a maternity shot I did while 8 months pregnant (I attached it at the end, just so you could see how I wanted to keep the same timeless/black & white feel for these photos as well). For this shoot, I set aside some time in the morning for just me and her where we could just hang out in the space we feel most comfortable. No fancy clothes, no big hairbows, & no expectations. Just us and the camera.

My goal was to capture some photos of us together, but what I walked away with was priceless images that will always be near and dear to my heart. It’s us just being ourselves and enjoying time together.

Full Belly Love – Posy Quarterman

I’m always excited to see a submission come in from Posy, knowing the images are going to feel just a bit magical. This maternity session leaves me feeling like spring is on the way, and also like this couple might have a pet unicorn…

From Posy: I’ve known Tiffany and Shanon since our first borns were just that, first born, and I’ve had the honor of photographing their gorgeous family a number of times over the years, as it has grown and blossomed from that first born girl to three babes with this fourth on his way; though because of early arrivals, and complications leading to bed rest in the past, we had yet to have a maternity session together, until now. Together we decided that although I love photographing their whole family, since we had just done that in the fall, it would be lovely to focus on just the two (three!) of them together for the maternity session. And so it was I found myself just before Valentine’s Day, shooting these two love birds on a gorgeous sunny-but-brisk morning in a beautiful public garden not far from their home. I realized as we meandered through the garden, chatted during outfit changes in the car, and laughed like crazy at Shanon’s bad jokes, that I never get to hang with just the two of them. We had fun, and the two of them had a morning “off” together to soak up some sun, laugh, and love it up.

Shot with Nikon D600 35mm f2 lens and processed with VSCO FILM 1&2 presets for LR.
